Traditional wooden rune calendars from Finland are now available with English user instructions. These calendar staves
were used in Finland and Sweden, from around 1300 until the beginning of 1800. Most probably they were used already much earlier,
but since wood doesn't preserve well it is hard to know when they were first used. New models are being constructed this year.
A very typical example of a Finnish rune calendar from around year 1700. It was used in West Finland by several generations. The pattern on
this calendar is a true copy of the museum piece. Only the lunar runes have been adjusted to modern lunar cycles, so even they are perfectly
usable. So it is a working calendar.
Feast days of a year are marked with symbols on the top row.
Days of the year are marked on the middle row. Weekdays are
differentiated with 7 repeating runes and the Metonic cycle of the Moon is marked with 19 runes on the bottom line. The runes used on this
calendar are not the Swedish futhark, but there are a few same runes though in different order. Their origin is unknown.
Calendars are made of common alder, about 76 cm or 2 foot 6 inch. Price 50 euros + shipping. We ship worldwide.
All calendars come with an explanation leaflet in English, Swedish or Finnish.
